Future scope and reason to return

In 1989, sociologist and demographer, Alfred Savvy said that “The 21st century will be the century of ageing of mankind” and this is very much true as throughout the 20th century, the proportion of people aged over 60 has increased in all countries of the world.

The growth rate of the elderly population is more rapid in developing countries like India than in developed countries. The elderly population in my native country India is the second largest in the world, next only to China. This population was 77 million according to the 2001 Census (7.5 per cent of the total population), which grew to 104 million in 2011 (2011 Census) and then increased to 137 million in 2021. Population projections show that by 2050, the elderly population in India will surpass the population of children below 14 years. The proportion of people over 60 having reached above 7 per cent qualifies India as an ‘ageing’ country (as defined by the United Nations). Three-fourths of the elderly population lives in rural areas. Their annual growth rate is higher (3 per cent) as compared to the growth rate of the entire population (1.9 per cent).

Thus on account of the rapid increase of the ageing population in a nation like India, ageing and issues relating to Older Adults are increasingly being recognized and studied by people from various disciplines. This phenomenon has opened the door for many job opportunities at medical research centres, medical & educational institutes, retirement homes, long-term care homes, group homes, daycare centres, home support services, and community-based intervention programs to cater to the quality of ageing people and variety of job roles for employees with gerontology backgrounds include Social Service Worker, Lifestyle Assistant, Assisted Living Director, Resident Services Coordinator, Staff Development Coordinator, Health and Wellness Director, Case Manager. The average (3-6 years of experience) medical gerontologist gross salary in India is ₹ 14,00,000.

In addition, they earn an average bonus of ₹89,624. Salary estimates are based on salary survey data collected directly from employers and anonymous employees in India. An entry-level medical gerontologist (1-3 years of experience) earns an average salary of ₹ 8, 00,000. On the other end, a senior-level medical gerontologist (8+ years of experience) earns an average salary of ₹20, 00,000.
