Amritsar is one of the prominent cities of the state of Punjab which has historical, cultural and religious significance. It is known in the whole world for the holy Golden Temple which is a very important Sikh temple or gurudwara which is visited by many people of all religions every day. The holy pond present in the vicinity of the temple is called AmritSarovar and the city has derived its name from that, it means the pond of holy water. It does have Durgiana Temple which is a Hindu temple of great value. There are many other Sikh and Hindu religious places in Amritsar. The Wagha Border is very famous for the beating retreat ceremony which happens every evening and many Indians come to the city to watch that as it is a unique experience. It is also has the Rail connectivity to Pakistan from the Atari Railway station which is used as transport for people as well as import and export of goods. Amritsar is a very old city and most of the old areas are still maintaining the old architecture but this does not mean that it lacks modernity. It has transformed with time and incorporated the modern facilities and norms while maintaining the old ones, making the city a unique place.

Amritsar is known for its food and fashion since the earlier times and that has not changed at all even today. People visit Amritsar especially to shop for traditional clothes as you get the best of it in the city. Amritsar had been a progressive city in old times as well and education was given a lot of importance, therefore the students used to go abroad to acquire higher education at that time as well, however only a handful could do that as it was quite expensive. Contrary to that, at present many students and working professionals go overseas to either study or work.

Amritsar has booming textile and chemical industries along with machinery manufacturing and food processing industries. It is also, known for production of silk cloth. Due to this the youth here is quite interested in pursuing textile, chemical and mechanical engineering.
