The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is the world’s most widely recognised English proficiency exam for non-native speakers. But passing it requires more than knowing the four modules — there are test dates, fees, formats, scoring rules, and new 2026 changes every candidate must understand before booking. Here is your complete, up-to-date guide.

Important 2026 Update: IELTS is undergoing its biggest change in decades — moving fully to computer-based delivery from mid-2026, with a new Hybrid Format and a revised fee structure. All figures and rules in this guide have been updated to reflect the latest official announcements.

IELTS Test Types — Which One Do You Need?

IELTS comes in two main variants. Choosing the wrong one is a costly mistake:

IELTS Academic

  • For undergraduate, postgraduate, or doctoral admission
  • Required by universities in the UK, Canada, Australia, the USA, New Zealand, and Ireland
  • Minimum band commonly required: 6.0–7.0

IELTS General Training

  • For immigration (Canada PR, Australia PR, UK work visa)
  • For secondary education and work experience programs
  • Minimum band for Canada immigration: 6.0

IELTS for UKVI

  • Required specifically for UK Student Visa & UK work visas
  • Same content as standard IELTS, but video-recorded for the UK Home Office
  • Fee: ₹19,250 (slightly higher)

IELTS Life Skills

  • Speaking + Listening only (shorter test)
  • For UK family/spouse visa applications
  • Available at A1 and B1 levels
  • Fee: ₹18,000

The Big 2026 Change — Computer-Based & Hybrid Format

IELTS Goes Fully Digital from Mid-2026

The British Council, IDP Education, and Cambridge English formally confirmed in March 2026 that all IELTS tests worldwide will be delivered exclusively on a computer. Paper-based testing at most centres will end from mid-2026. What this means for you:

  • Listening and Reading will be completed on screen
  • Results are delivered faster (typically 3–5 days vs up to 13 days for paper)
  • CD-IELTS is already available all 7 days of the week — no waiting for selected dates
  • The core exam structure, syllabus, and band scoring remain the same

New: IELTS Writing on Paper (Hybrid Option)

Recognising that many Indian students write more naturally by hand, IELTS has introduced a hybrid format: Listening and Reading on a computer, but the Writing tasks are completed on physical answer sheets, which are then scanned and submitted digitally. Scores are equal to a fully computer-based test — there is no penalty for choosing this format. Note: UKVI candidates are not eligible for this option due to UK Home Office requirements.

Test Dates & Scheduling

When Can You Take the Test?

The IELTS Academic and General Training tests cover three modules — Writing, Reading, and Listening — taken on the same day. The Speaking test is scheduled separately, typically 3–4 days before or after your main test date. You will receive the time and venue for your Speaking test by email, so monitor your inbox regularly.

Paper-Based IELTS

  • Approximately 48 dates per year for Academic
  • Around 24 of those dates also offer General Training
  • Calendar published on the IDP / British Council website
  • Being phased out from mid-2026 at most centres

Computer-Delivered IELTS

  • Available all 7 days of the week
  • Far more flexible — book slots that suit your schedule
  • Faster results: typically 3–5 days
  • Becoming the standard format from 2026 onwards

IELTS Exam Fee in India — 2026 Update

The IELTS exam fee in India increased to ₹19,000 from April 1, 2026. Here is the complete 2026 fee structure:

Test Type Format Fee (2026) Status
IELTS Academic Paper or Computer ₹19,000 Updated Apr 2026
IELTS General Training Paper or Computer ₹19,000 Updated Apr 2026
IELTS for UKVI Computer only ₹19,250 Updated Apr 2026
IELTS Life Skills (A1/B1) Computer ₹18,000 Current
One Skill Retake Computer ₹12,650 Current
Rescheduling Fee ₹4,500 Current
EOR / Re-evaluation (per module) ₹11,500 Refunded if score changes

The fee is uniform across all test centres and cities in India — there is no city-wise variation. IELTS coaching centres that are authorised by IDP, British Council, or Cambridge English Assessment can also book the test on behalf of their students.

New: One Skill Retake (OSR)

Retake Just the Module You Need

If you score well in three modules but fall short in one — say, Writing — you no longer need to retake the entire exam. The IELTS One Skill Retake allows you to rebook a single module (Listening, Reading, Writing, or Speaking) for ₹12,650. The retake must be taken within 60 days of your original test date. Your best score across both attempts is used. Note: OSR is only available for computer-delivered IELTS.

Test Papers — Myths vs. Facts

Does the Test Centre or Date Affect Paper Difficulty?

There are persistent myths online that certain test dates or centres have “easier” or “harder” papers. This is completely false. All IELTS test papers are designed by expert item writers and psychometrically calibrated to the same difficulty level, regardless of date or centre. Believing these myths leads students to over- or under-prepare, which directly harms their band score. Prepare consistently — every paper is equally demanding.

Band Scores — What Do They Mean?

IELTS scores range from 0 to 9 in 0.5-band increments. Here is what each band means and the common institutional requirements:

Band Level Description
9 Expert User Full command of the language — accurate, fluent, with complete understanding.
8 Very Good User Strong command with only occasional inaccuracies. Handles complex communication well.
7 Good User Effective user with occasional inaccuracies. Manages complex language in familiar contexts.
6 Competent User Above average, with some inaccuracies. Generally understands complex language in familiar situations. Most universities require a minimum Band 6.0–6.5.
5 Modest User Handles basic communication in one’s own field with frequent errors.
4 Limited User Basic English in familiar situations; struggles with complex language.
3 Extremely Limited Only general meaning; frequent communication breakdowns.
2 Intermittent User Unable to communicate properly; only random words in familiar situations.
1 Non User No real ability to use the language.
0 Did Not Attempt Not applicable.

Target Scores by Country (2026)

In today’s more competitive visa environment, merely clearing the minimum band is no longer enough. Here is what each major destination actually expects:

Country Undergraduate Postgraduate Study Visa / Immigration Recommended Target
🇨🇦 Canada 6.0–6.5 (no band < 5.5) 6.5–7.0 6.0 (CLB 7) 7.0+
🇦🇺 Australia 6.0–6.5 (no band < 5.5) 6.5–7.0 6.0 (skilled visa) 7.0+
🇬🇧 UK 6.0–6.5 6.5–7.0 5.5–6.5 (student visa) 6.5–7.0
🇺🇸 USA 6.0–6.5 6.5–7.5 N/A (university-set) 7.0+
🇳🇿 New Zealand 6.0 6.5 5.5 (govt minimum) 6.5+
🇮🇪 Ireland 6.0–6.5 6.5 6.0 6.5+
🇩🇪 Germany 6.0–6.5 6.5 6.0–6.5 6.5+

Pro Tip from Abroad Gateway: Always check your specific university’s band requirement — and the individual module minimums, not just the overall score. Many programs require no module to fall below 6.0 or 6.5, even if your overall band is higher.

Score Validity & Re-evaluation

How Long Are IELTS Scores Valid?

IELTS scores are valid for two years from the test date. After two years, most universities and immigration authorities will no longer accept the score, and you must retest.

Enquiry on Results (EOR) — Re-evaluation

If you believe your performance was significantly better than your score suggests, you can apply for an Enquiry on Results (EOR) — a formal re-evaluation of one or all modules. The remarking fee is ₹11,500 per module, and you must apply within six weeks of the test date. Results are announced within 2–21 days. If your band score changes after remarking, the full fee is refunded. Authorised coaching centres, including Abroad Gateway, can apply on behalf of students.

Score Verification by Universities

Universities, employers, and immigration authorities can directly verify a candidate’s IELTS score through the Test Report Form (TRF) verification service offered by IELTS. Institutions register for this service independently, so your score is secure and tamper-proof.

Practical Tips for 2026 Test-Takers

Book Early: Computer-delivered IELTS offers more dates, but slots fill up quickly in Chandigarh and Delhi during peak admission seasons (January–March and August–October).

Choose Your Format Deliberately: If you are comfortable typing long essays under timed pressure, go fully computer-based. If handwriting is your strength, use the new Writing on Paper hybrid option where available. There is no score advantage either way — choose what lets you perform best.

Prepare for Computer-based Reading: CD-IELTS Reading uses split-screen functionality. Practise scrolling through long passages on screen — it feels different from paper and requires adjustment.

Aim Above the Minimum: For countries like Canada with tighter caps on study permits, a Band 7.5 or above can meaningfully differentiate your application from others who clear the minimum.

Know Your Cancellation Rights: Cancelling 9 or more days before the test date incurs a 25% fee; cancellations made closer to the date incur higher fees. Rescheduling costs ₹4,500 — plan your test date carefully.

Use One Skill Retake Strategically: If mock tests consistently show weakness in one module, use the OSR after your first attempt rather than booking a full retest. It saves both time and money.

Keep Your Passport Valid: A valid passport is required both at registration and on test day. Your name on the registration must match your passport exactly.
