The UK’s India Young Professionals Scheme (IYPS)/UK Lottery Visa is about to open its final ballot of 2026. The government has confirmed the window will run from 1:30 pm IST on 21 July to 1:30 pm IST on 23 July — just 48 hours to register for a shot at one of the last remaining 3,000 places this year.

This is actually the second of two ballots held each year. The first ballot of 2026 ran from 17 to 19 February, and the vast majority of the year’s 3,000 places were allocated through that round. The July ballot offers only the places that remain — which makes this window smaller and more competitive, and also your last opportunity to enter in 2026. If you missed the February ballot or entered it and weren’t selected, this is your only remaining shot this year.

If you’re an Indian citizen aged 18 to 30 dreaming of living and working in the UK without needing a job offer or an employer sponsor, this guide walks you through exactly how the ballot works, whether you qualify, what it costs, and how to apply once you’re selected.

Quick Facts: July 2026 Ballot

  • Opens: 1:30 pm IST, 21 July 2026
  • Closes: 1:30 pm IST, 23 July 2026 (48-hour window)
  • This is the second and FINAL ballot of 2026
  • 3,000 total places for 2026 — most already allocated in February; remaining places offered now
  • Entry is completely free

What Is the India Young Professionals Scheme Visa?

The India Young Professionals Scheme is a reciprocal mobility arrangement between the UK and India. It allows eligible Indian citizens between 18 and 30 years old to live, work, and study in the United Kingdom for up to two years — without needing a job offer or employer sponsorship before they travel.

British High Commissioner to India Lindy Cameron has described the programme as an initiative designed to strengthen ties between the two countries, encouraging eligible applicants from across India to enter regardless of which city or region they call home.

On this visa, you can:

  • Study in the UK (some courses require an Academic Technology Approval Scheme certificate)
  • Work in most jobs
  • Be self-employed or set up a company — as long as your premises are rented, your equipment is worth under £5,000, and you have no employees

You cannot:

  • Extend your stay beyond the visa period
  • Apply for most public funds or benefits
  • Include family members on your application — they must apply separately
  • Work as a professional sportsperson (including as a coach)

Keep in mind: entering the ballot only requires you to declare that you’re eligible. Your eligibility is formally checked only when you submit your actual visa application after being selected.

How the India Young Professionals Scheme Visa Ballot System Works

Step 1: Enter During the Window

The July 2026 ballot opens at 1:30 pm IST on 21 July and closes at 1:30 pm IST on 23 July — a strict 48-hour entry window. You can submit your entry at any point during this period; the official entry link appears on the GOV.UK India Young Professionals Scheme page once the ballot goes live.

Step 2: Submit Your Details

To enter, you’ll need to provide:

  • Full name and date of birth
  • Passport details, plus a scan or photo of your passport
  • Phone number and email address

Step 3: One Entry Per Person

Only one entry per person is counted for each ballot. Any duplicate entries you submit will simply be disregarded — so there’s no advantage to entering more than once.

Step 4: Random Selection

Selection is entirely random. Qualifications, work experience, financial status, or how early you enter during the 48-hour window make no difference to your odds — every valid entry across the full window is pooled before the draw runs.

Step 5: Results

If you’re successful, you’ll receive an email within 2 weeks of the ballot closing, inviting you to apply for the visa. Results are final: unsuccessful entries cannot be appealed. If you’re not selected, you can enter a future ballot as long as you still meet the eligibility criteria — though this is the last ballot of 2026, so the next opportunity would be in 2027.

What Happens If You’re Selected in the India Young Professionals Scheme

Once you receive your selection email, the clock starts on a 90-day window. Within that time, you must:

  • Apply for the visa online
  • Prove your identity
  • Submit your supporting documents

You’ll also need to travel to the UK within 6 months of the date you apply. For example, if you apply on 16 July, you must arrive in the UK by 15 January the following year at the latest.

How to Apply for the India Young Professionals Scheme

Applications are made through the Youth Mobility Scheme visa route — simply select “India” as your nationality when applying. You’ll then need to verify your identity in one of two ways:

  • Use the ‘UK Immigration: ID Check’ app to scan your passport and set up (or sign into) your UKVI account, or
  • Book an appointment at a visa application centre to have your biometric information (fingerprints and photo) taken

Once you’ve applied, proven your identity, and submitted your documents, you’ll usually receive a decision within 3 weeks. This can take longer if your documents need verification, you’re asked to attend an interview, or your personal circumstances require extra checks. A paid priority (faster) decision service is also available.

Note on refunds: Your application fee will not be refunded if your visa is rejected. You can request to cancel your application, but you’ll only get a refund if UK Visas and Immigration hasn’t already started processing it.

How Much Does It Cost?

Cost ItemAmount
Ballot entryFree
Visa application fee£340
Immigration Health Surcharge£1,552 (covers the full 2-year visa)
Proof of savings required£2,530 (yours to keep — not a fee)
Total Home Office charges£1,892

The application fee is paid only if you’re selected in the ballot and choose to proceed — entering the ballot itself never costs anything.

Visa Validity & Re-Entry

  • You’ll be granted a visa for up to 24 months.
  • You can enter the UK at any time while your visa is valid, and leave and re-enter freely during your stay.
  • If you turn 31 after your visa is issued, you can still stay for the full validity period — the age limit only applies at the point of application.

If You Have a Child While in the UK

A child born in the UK while you’re on this visa does not automatically become a British citizen. If you want to travel in and out of the UK with your child, you’ll need to apply online for their dependent visa and provide a full UK birth certificate showing both parents’ names.
